Baby on board

「赤ちゃんが乗っています」というステッカーを貼った車を見るたびに、何を伝えたいのだろうかと疑問に思い、車の持ち主は自己中心的な人だろうなと想像してしまいます。
これは日本だけのものかと思ったら、イギリスにもあるようです。
P.D. Jamesの "The Lighthouse" を読んでいたら、以下の文章がありました。

外国にも同じようなものがあり、同じように感じる人がいるんだなと思いました。

P.D. Jamesの作品はいまだに簡単には読めません。単語の難しさもありますが、省略されている部分がたくさんあって、しばらく考えてから省略に気づくことが多いのも理由です。

"as they might the pieces of a jigsaw" の部分が理解できなくて、しばらく考えて、"picking up, discarding or clicking" を mightの後ろに入れればいいことに気づきました。

翻訳書には「週末は別の計画を立てて、目の前に現れないダルグリッシュを念頭から追い払うのではないだろうか」と訳されています。
"as he was" の後ろに "excluding her" か "excluding him" が省略されているのだと思いますが、"from her company" の部分がよく解りません。「彼女と一緒にいること」から自分を除外するという意味で、"excluding himself" なのでしょうか？

各々の文が長く、副詞句がどこにかかるか解りにくいのも P.D. James の難しさです。

"as carefully as if he were taking part in a religious ceremony" がどこにかかるかということですが、翻訳書では carrying にかかっているように読めます。コンマがあるので、folding にかかるのではないかというのがわたしの推測です。ついでにいえば、meticulously は side to side まで含めてかかるように訳すべきだと思います。

翻訳書を確認することで勉強になる部分もたくさんあります。
