コンマ

あるＷｅｂページに「並列構造を "A, B, and C" と表現するとき、"and" の直前のコンマは必須であり、コンマがないのは致命的欠陥である」という趣旨の説明がありました。
わたしがふだん目にする英文にはコンマのないものもたくさんあると思ったので、事実関係を調べてみました。

たとえば最近のニュースで以下の文を見ました。コンマはありません。

"The Elements of Style (William Strunk, Jr.)" にはコンマが必要だと書かれています。上記の主張はこういうものがベースになっているのかもしれません。しかし、この本が書かれたのは 1918年です。

「英語正読マニュアル（村上陽介 著）」にはつぎのように書かれており、コンマは必須ではないと説明しています。

(1, 2, 3, －, and n) のように並列となっているそれぞれの項目をコンマで区切り、最後の項目の前に＜and＞を入れるのが原則である。ただし、誤解が生じないときには、この＜and＞の前のコンマを省略した (1, 2, 3, － and n) の型が使われることもある。

ただし、BEでは (1, 2, 3, － and n) のように、コンマを使わない型のほうがふつうである。

コンマが必須ではないということは実例からも上記の本からも分かるので、これで十分かと思いましたが、Wikipedia を見たらもっと詳しい説明がありました。この説明は読む価値があります。
